The Uppercut Elbow In Muay Thai Is Used To Sneak Through The Guard And Cause Damage
The uppercut elbow of Muay Thai is very similar to the uppercut punch. The body mechanics are almost the same. If using the front elbow pivot your hips in a clockwise direction (if you're right handed) and twist your torso and snap your shoulder upwards.
The forward hand should go to your left or right shoulder (depending on which type of uppercut elbow you are doing; see the video below) as the forward elbow is raised upward toward your opponents chin.
The rear uppercut elbow is the same movement with the rear elbow which means slightly more turning motion with the body. The right hand again goes to the right or left shoulder depending on which type of elbow you are doing.
Both are done very close to your opponent inside of his or her guard. With all uppercut elbows keep the striking elbow hand as close to the eyebrow as possible for as long as possible. Only bring it to your shoulder at the last minute as this helps your defence and disguises what you are doing.
