The Most Common Kick In Muay Thai Is The Round Kick - Cripple Your Opponents Legs Or Body And Go for That Spectacular Knockout
Typically you will only see 2 kicks performed in Muay Thai which are the round kick and the foot jab or push kick. There are several reasons for this. Firstly they are easy to learn and they are effective. The art of Muay Thai developed from the battle field where only simple and effective is worth learning for the sake of your life.
These kicks are delivered with the body facing forward which is necessary for the delivery of ALL the various weapons of Muay Thai. Also the body facing forward makes it easier to defend against all the weapons of Muay Thai. Try blocking a Muay Thai leg kick without facing your body forward and you will soon start doing things the Thai way.
Another reason for just 2 kicks is that these 2 are fast and powerful and take less energy to throw which is important in competition. One last reason is that in Muay Thai you can jam someones kicking foot in between your downward elbow and upward knee which can be quite crippling. The foot is protected from this type of punishment when performing the round or push kick.
The foot jab is typically thrown with the front leg and is not chambered which makes it quicker. Chambering is the pulling in of the foot towards the body first before striking out towards the opponent. Chambering looks like your pulling your knee to your chest first and then throwing the leg forwards. This is not done with the Muay Thai foot jab and neither is snapping back of the foot after the kick.
The foot travels up and out simultaneously and pushes through the opponent with the toes pulled back. The whole body is used in the kick to extend the leg and then the foot drops to the floor. The toes are also facing up or slightly inwards as the ball of the foot strikes the target.
The targets of the push kick are the legs all the way up to the head. The ball of the foot is used on the targets from the legs to the stomach and the flat of the foot is used from the chest to the head.
There are 4 different basic types of foot jab. The short moving forward push kick (where you step forward with the right leg and kick with the left), the long moving forward push kick (again step forward with right leg only with a bigger step and kick with the left), the hopping push kick (hop forward with the right leg whilst simultaneously kicking with the left), and the push kick after shielding (lift your left shin up to block then kick forward immediately after and then drop it to the floor).
