The Muay Thai Uppercut Can Sneak Up Through Your Guard So Your Defense Has To Be Tight
The uppercut can be very damaging because of it's power and also because of it's angle of attack. Because it comes up and through very straight it is hard to block if there is a slight hole in between the arms of your guard.
There are several options though as there are 5 main tactics in Muay Thai defence.
1. You can move out of the way by using your footwork to retreat backwards or sidewards or you can lean you upper body away while keeping your feet where they are.
2. You can't really parry the uppercuting arm but you can parry the shoulder throwing the punch.
3. You can shield the uppercut by guarding with your arms but they have to be close together with your hands shielding your face.
4. You can neutralise your opponents attack with your own like a push kick as this is longer and will keep him/her at bay.
5. You can't really catch the weapon as the uppercut is a short range weapon and it comes at such an angle which would make this virtually impossible.
